A powerful and unusually emotive one-off original by Bristol artist Signs, showing a very different side to the artist’s work.

Mourners depicts a tightly gathered crowd of figures, their faces and expressions emerging from a predominantly monochrome composition. The restricted palette of black, white and muted flesh tones creates a sombre, almost documentary quality, while the repetition of faces gives the work a powerful sense of collective emotion.

Unlike Signs’ colourful architectural and city-based pieces, Mourners places people and human emotion at the centre of the composition. The raw application of the media and areas of exposed surface add to the intensity of the piece, giving it a haunting, almost photographic quality.

At 56 × 76 cm, this is a substantial original with real presence and a more contemplative character than much of Signs’ urban work.

About Signs

Signs is a Bristol-based artist whose work draws heavily on architecture, street culture and the urban environment. Using spray paint, hand-cut stencils and expressive mixed-media techniques, Signs creates distinctive contemporary works ranging from colourful cityscapes to more challenging figurative pieces.

Mourners reveals a particularly different dimension to his practice.
