Dan Pearce – Royal Gem

Artist’s Proof (A/P) | Hand-Finished Mixed Media

A spectacular collision of British royalty, classical portraiture and contemporary street culture, Royal Gem is a statement work by British contemporary artist Dan Pearce.

Taking inspiration from Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Pearce reimagines Queen Elizabeth II in the familiar pose, replacing the serenity of the Old Master with layers of graffiti, tags, paint drips and vivid urban interventions.

The piece plays brilliantly with contrasts. Royal tradition meets street rebellion, while the ornate presentation sits against the rawness of the graffiti-inspired imagery. Details including the crown motif, tags and bold “MADE IN ENGLAND” typography give the work a distinctly British identity.

This example is an Artist’s Proof (A/P) and features mixed-media and hand-finished elements, giving the work greater individuality than a conventional editioned print.

The presentation is particularly striking. An elaborate traditional-style frame has itself been transformed with painted and sprayed interventions, extending the artwork beyond the image and making the complete piece feel like a single contemporary object.

About Dan Pearce

Dan Pearce is a British contemporary artist known for combining street art, pop culture and mixed-media techniques. His work frequently takes instantly recognisable cultural figures and imagery and disrupts them through graffiti, layered textures, bold colour and hand-applied interventions.

Royal Gem is a particularly strong example of that approach, bringing together two instantly recognisable strands of cultural history and giving them an unmistakably contemporary British street-art treatment.
