Darkly funny and instantly recognisable, Trim Reaper by Dirty Rats (Sinking Ship) takes one of history’s most ominous figures and gives him a brilliantly mundane new occupation.

The Grim Reaper has traded in his traditional duties for a lawnmower, diligently trimming the grass beside a solitary gravestone while his scythe lies abandoned nearby. Beneath the hood, an unexpected flash of bright yellow reveals a smiling face, completely changing the mood of the familiar figure.

It is classic gallows humour. Death is still at work, he has simply changed tools.

The stripped-back composition gives the joke its impact. Heavy black silhouettes dominate the textured paper, while the single yellow smile provides the only burst of colour. The simplicity gives the piece the immediacy of a street stencil while allowing the small visual details to tell the story.
