NEVERWORK – If You Pay Peanuts

“If you pay peanuts…” Neverwork turns a familiar saying into a sharp piece of social commentary.

If You Pay Peanuts features a suited chimp standing beside a bicycle, combining humour with Neverwork’s unmistakable stencil aesthetic. The unfinished phrase leaves the viewer to complete the message for themselves: “you get monkeys.”

Created using spray paint and stencil on box canvas, the restricted black-and-white palette sits against a warm background, giving the image an immediate graphic quality. Look closer and the humour gives way to something more pointed, touching on work, value, money and the absurdities of modern society.

At 57 × 57cm, it has enough scale to make an impact without dominating a room. Presented on box canvas and ready to hang, it can go straight onto the wall with no additional framing required.

This is a unique, one-off original artwork. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

About Neverwork

Born in Leeds in 1979, Neverwork began creating art on the streets, transforming neglected urban spaces into thought-provoking works.

Influenced by street culture, punk, surrealism and the Situationist movement, his work rejects convention and frequently questions the expectations, behaviours and contradictions of contemporary society.

The name Neverwork is more than an artist alias. It represents a philosophy of questioning what we're told life should look like and embracing creative freedom outside conventional structures.

His stencil-led work often uses recognisable imagery, humour and visual contradictions to draw the viewer in before revealing something more challenging underneath.

If You Pay Peanuts is a perfect example: funny at first glance, but with a message that hits considerably harder.
